Stefanos Stefanou is AKEL’s new leader
The new Central Committee of the Working People’s Progressive Party (AKEL) that was elected by the party’s 23 Congress, which was convened on 3-4 July 2021, has elected Stefanos Stefanou as the party’s new General Secretary, to replace Andros Kyprianou, who has retired from that position.
AKEL has released the following details regarding its new General Secretary:
Stefanos Stefanou was born in the occupied village of Gerolakko in 1965, where he lived until the Turkish invasion. He spent his early years in his father’s village, Deftera. He has lived in Geri since 1995. He is married to the teacher Georgia Zenonos and they have two children.
He played football for the youth team of Omonia Nicosia (1980-1984) and was an international player with the National Youth Team (1982-1984).
He was a full-time cadre in Sofia, Bulgaria and holds a degree in Political Science. He was President of the Bulgarian Cypriot Student Organization.
He worked at EDON, serving in various positions. In 1996 he was elected General Secretary of EDON, a position he held until 2001.
Leaving EDON, he assumed duties in the Office of the Speaker of Parliament, Demetris Christofias, as Special Advisor, until 2008.
From 2008 to 2013 he was Government Spokesman in the government of Demetris Christofias.
He served as District Secretary of AKEL Nicosia-Kyrenia (2013-2016). Since 2016 he is an MP in the Nicosia region. He is a member of the Central Secretariat and the Political Bureau of AKEL. He is the AKEL Spokesperson and Head of the Press and Communication Office of AKEL.
