Three Cypriot Labour candidates ask for your support and your vote on 4th July
With three new generation Cypriots among the Labour Party candidates – in Southgate & Wood Green, Barking and Romford – the Labour Cypriot Society is calling on the Cypriot community to vote Labour, emphasising that our community will play a significant role in some of the marginal seats. “With an estimated population of more than 300,000 Cypriots in the UK, the community can play a significant role in this election, and in parliament”. And now, among other things, “we have the opportunity to elect three brilliant Cypriots to Westminster, all standing for the Labour Party”.
Yes, there are three Cypriots among the Labour Party candidates for the 4th July elections – two Greek Cypriots and one Turkish Cypriot.
That’s a very good development for the UK Cypriot community. We sincerely hope they will be elected. We must all do our utmost to help them win and the most important, for those who live in their constituencies, is to use their vote and vote for them.
If they are elected and work together it will be a landmark for our community in terms of increasing our presence and influence in UK political life.
For the first time there will be three Cypriots in the House of Commons and not just one – Bambos Charalambous – as was previously the case.
Many Cypriots are being elected to municipal councils for decades, playing an important role in local government, but UK Cypriots have been rather slow when it comes to claiming the role they deserve, like some other ethnic communities, in parliament and national government.
The three Cypriot candidates
According to a Labour Cypriot Society general election media notice the three Cypriot Labour candidates are Bambos Charalambous in Southgate and Wood Green, Nesil Caliscan in Barking and Andrew Achilleos in Romford.
- Bambos Charalambous, now the Labour candidate for Southgate and Wood Green, had been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Enfield Southgate since 2017. During his time as a Labour MP, he held a series of shadow ministry posts.
- Nesil Caliscan, now the Labour candidate for Barking, has had a very successful career in local government with the Labour Party and was the Leader of Enfield Council when she was selected to run for Barking.
- Andrew Achilleos, now the Labour candidate for Romford, has had a rich career working for years for Labour MP Jon Cruddas and has been a Labour Councillor for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and Chair of Dagenham & Rainham CLP.
At UKCY News we are happy to predict that all three of them will be successful.
The Labour Cypriot Society
The Labour Cypriot Society has released the following media notice:
“Make Your Vote Count, Make Cypriots Count: Calling on Cypriots to vote Labour on 4th July.
The 2024 General Election has been called for Thursday 4th July and the Labour Cypriot Society is calling on Cypriots up and down the country to vote for change and cast their vote for the Labour Party.
The General Election will be a choice between a weak and divided Conservative Party that has crashed our economy, decimated public services and diminished our international standing, and a dynamic, progressive Labour Party that will deliver for our community.
Labour has set out five missions to change Britain: long-term plans to make sure that this country works for working people again. They are:
- Get the NHS back on its feet
- Get Britain building again
- Switch on Great British Energy
- Take back our streets
- Break down the barriers to opportunity
The Labour Cypriot Society is calling on the Cypriot community to vote Labour. With an estimated population of more than 300,000 Cypriots in the UK, the community can play a significant role in this election, and in parliament. We have the opportunity to elect three brilliant Cypriots to Westminster, all standing for the Labour Party:
- Bambos Charalambous, in Southgate and Wood Green
- Nesil Caliskan, in Barking
- Andrew Achilleos, in Romford
Importantly, our community will play a significant role in some of the marginal seats that Labour needs to win from the Conservatives to win this election. We therefore urge Cypriots to vote on 4th July for:
- Dan Tomlinson, in Chipping Barnet
- Sarah Sackman, in Finchley and Golders Green
- David Pinto-Duchinsky, in Hendon
- Rachel Blake, in the Cities of London and Westminster
- Ben Coleman, in Chelsea and Fulham
- Matt Turmaine, in Watford
- Eleanor Stringer, in Wimbledon
The Labour Cypriot Society is organising events, canvassing sessions, leafletting, phone banking, election day volunteering and fundraising throughout the election.
We’ll be posting live information about sessions anyone can join to campaign for a Labour government on our WhatsApp group. To join please send a WhatsApp message to Maria on 07718 976 065 or follow this link:

In his speech to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said:
“Playing our part on the world stage makes us stronger and better off at home. …With a Labour government, the UK would be a point of stability in a chaotic world, that we would always meet our international obligations, take our responsibilities seriously and be a leader on the world stage once more.
Our joint endeavour, our shared values, our common respect for freedom, democracy, liberty, that’s what we were fighting for and that fight never stops.”
The Labour Cypriot Society was revived in 2022, with the aim of mobilising the Cypriot community in support of the Labour Party, and campaigning for a Labour government. Its members are united behind the aims of a Labour government in the UK, and a united, peaceful Cyprus.
