Sometimes “winners” and always managers of capitalism
The two party system in the UK makes sure that the so-called “alternative government” is never radical and still a manager of capitalism.
I have lived in this country for half a century and have never seen really radical change to its in many respects anachronistic system as a result of a Labour Party election victory.
From my own personal experience, at grassroots level the Labour Party is mainly a left/socialist party, people long for radical change, real social justice, but the anachronistic establishment of this country, as reflected by the mass media and its other organs, always makes sure they end up in government with conservative leaders.
Such leaders forget any radical elements in their election manifesto. In their efforts to conform to the requirements of the capitalist media, they end up with conservative (in the literal sense) policies packaged as Labour policies, essentially trying to do what the Tories do in a “better way”.
Inevitably, they end up with another mess and the Tories win the next elections. Personally, I am utterly fed up with this cycle – this vicious circle. We have a credibility crisis.
That’s what makes masses of British people who wanted real change in their country – social justice and a meaningful life – to become abstainers and withdraw from the political process altogether.
There was nothing wrong with Jeremy Corbyn. We must forget about being in government as a purpose in itself. We must work to change society, to change the anachronistic system, not just the government.
“They are all the same”. That’s the top response we hear during election campaigns. We need to inspire hope that real, radical change and a meaningful life is both possible and feasible.
We must grow out of the stupid culture of “winners” and “losers” as if politics is footbal. Winning elections without a chance of real change “for the many” and not just for making the rich richer and the privileged more privileged, is not a win – it’s a total loss.
Excellent article!
