A poem & a painting from the world of Makis Lazos

Makis painting
My Island
By Makis Lazos

My island
with the broken dreams.
The land with the crystal streams.
The birthplace of love
and Hemisphere's white dove!

The sun's beloved child
So sweet and so bright!
The morning's strongest light.
But no one to help her
in her darkest plight.

The knife of power
Imprinted its incision
And Cyprus' heart endures
The horrible division

How many more yellow tears,
And children's souls full of tears?
Since I lost your mother dear
All I want is for you to hear

That I pray for your freedom
And to see you like before.
I fight for your freedom
And to walk on your golden shores.

He speaks with his paintings and paints pictures with his poems. Makis Lazos is both a poet and a painter. He is also an actor and a dancer. He is a writer too. He is an artist with many talents. The most moving side of Makis is that throughout his life he has tried to express his feelings and ideas in every possible or conceivable way, both mentally and physically. His body language is poetry in itself. We hope to have much more from the Magic World of Makis in UKCY NEWS.

With this Makis’ poem, UKCY NEWS also launches a new section – Poetry. Poetry is far more important for our life than what some people imagine. Cypriots are a very poetic people. We would like to open our pages to the poets of our community. You don’t have to be a Nobel standard poet. Just feel free to express yourself and send your poems to us. We have an ambition to organise an annual competition of UK Cypriot poetry.
